Many people are missing out on the enormous benefits of seeing a physical therapist simply because they are misinformed.
In my clinical practice, I asked my patients what physical therapy means to them?
This is what they replied :-
‘Physical therapy is all about hot and cold packs, lots of exercises, massage and equipment therapy. Every physical therapist is same ’
Physical therapy is more about the whole body approach which is alinged by manual techniques i.e manipulation and mobilisation. Every physical therapist is different and have their own way of approaches towards the treatment plan. It is more diversified and specialised now i.e we have musculoskeletal physical therapist, cardiorespiratory, neurological, orthopaedic, paediatric, sports and even obstetrician and gynaecologist physical therapist.
People believe that physical therapy is general treatment only. Infact it is more about holistic treatment which includes whole body approach. The recovery from pain is not only at the site of the pain but it is from the whole body.
For people physical pain is only related to muscles, bones and joints. This information is wrong. It is also related to mental, emotional and socio economic factors.
What people should search when finding a good physical therapist is the one who understands the complexities and interconnections of the human body.
A physical therapist is a medical professional whose work is to optimize the individuals physical health and quality of life.
A good physical therapist will listen to the patient’s problem, understand it well and will give the patient a clear picture of their problem.
A good physical therapist will never give the patient a false hope. They should be positive, motivate the patient in every step of recovery. They should not look only at the site of pain or dysfunction but should try to find out the true cause of that pain or dysfunction. They should be treating the body as a one unit because problem at one joint can cause dysfunction at other.
A good physical therapist not only work on the physical health but also on the mental, emotional and spiritual well being of the patient.
They work on the patient’s lifestyle and let them modify these habits or postures that impact the individuals health.
